Running Pace Chart
Quick conversions between per-mile and per-kilometer paces, plus what each pace means for common race distances.
Key conversions: 6:00/km = 9:39/mi, 5:30/km = 8:51/mi, 5:00/km = 8:03/mi, 4:30/km = 7:15/mi. Multiply pace by distance for finish times. Use the calculator below for exact figures at any pace.
How to read pace conversions
Multiply a per-kilometer pace by 1.60934 to get per-mile pace; divide per-mile by 1.60934 for per-kilometer. A 5:00/km pace is 8:03/mi; an 8:00/mi pace is 4:58/km.
Speed is the inverse: 60 divided by minutes-per-kilometer gives km/h. A 5:00/km pace is 12 km/h; 6:00/km is 10 km/h.
Common training paces
Easy runs for a 25-minute 5K runner sit around 6:00 to 6:30/km (9:40 to 10:30/mi). Tempo pace for the same runner is about 5:10/km (8:19/mi). Interval pace matches 5K race pace, 5:00/km.
Scale by your own race pace: easy is 60 to 90 sec/mi slower than 5K pace, tempo 25 to 30 sec/mi slower, marathon pace 30 to 45 sec/mi slower.
What paces produce at race distances
At 5:00/km: 5K in 25:00, 10K in 50:00, half marathon in 1:45:29, marathon in 3:30:59. At 6:00/km: 5K in 30:00, 10K in 1:00:00, half in 2:06:35, marathon in 4:13:10.
These assume perfectly even pacing, which almost nobody achieves. Treat them as targets to pace against, with the first half slightly conservative.
Marathon pace landmarks
Sub-3:00 marathon needs 4:16/km (6:52/mi). Sub-3:30 needs 4:59/km (8:01/mi). Sub-4:00 needs 5:41/km (9:09/mi). Sub-4:30 needs 6:24/km (10:18/mi). Sub-5:00 needs 7:07/km (11:27/mi).
Each 30-minute marathon barrier is about 43 seconds per kilometer. Small pace changes compound over 42 kilometers, which is why marathon pacing discipline matters so much.

Pace conversions
How do I convert min/mile to min/km?
Divide the per-mile pace by 1.60934. An 8:00 per mile pace becomes about 4:58 per kilometer. To convert per-kilometer to per-mile, multiply by 1.60934 instead.
What is 5K in miles?
A 5K is 3.10686 miles. A 10K is 6.21371 miles, a half marathon is 13.1094 miles, and a marathon is 26.2188 miles (42.195 kilometers).
What pace is 10 km/h?
10 km/h equals 6:00 per kilometer, about 9:39 per mile. Convert speed to pace by dividing 60 by the speed: 60/10 = 6 minutes per kilometer.
